<War - what if it were here?>

If the Danes no longer live in a safe and democratic country. If there is fighting in the streets surrounded by explosions and snipers. If people are tortured or disappear for speaking their mind. If parents have to decide if they and their children have a better chance of survival on the run. What would a family become? What would life be like for a Danish boy trying to make it in another country with his parents and younger sister?

It's a depiction of the Scandinavian region as a dissolved society and the human consequences of war. Home and belonging are no longer a given. Suddenly, Danes are on the run from their own country and must seek asylum in the Middle East.

They now become the alienated.

...At one point, the audience experiences the family's everyday life in a refugeecamp in Egypt, where they stay until they get a residence permit. Here they spend the day playing football together. After a while, however, they realise that they need more players. And all of a sudden, they have dragged three complete strangers from the audience onto the stage to play football with them. I've never seen that before, and it makes several people in the audience laugh. But it also feels like we all become part of the family's story. Which is another reason why the story gets so close to the audience.

...But the fact that we are shown what some people might do, if there was war in the Nordic countries moves the question to a higher level. Especially when there has been war in Ukraine since February. At the same time, the audience gets to see up close what life is like for refugees. It's an important story that unfolds in Hvis der var krig i Norden, which portrays the family's journey over several years.

War - what if it were here is a thoroughly recommendable show that will undoubtedly get you thinking. So do yourself a favour and buy a ticket, because it's a powerful performance that you won't forget easily!

(Sanne Hebsgaard - Ungt teaterblod)

...Because when the archetypal family with mum, dad and two kids, sitting on the sofa waiting for dad to make pancakes, and then the house is bombed and the living room suddenly a pile of rubble - the world is turned upside down and everyone in the audience is affected - can this really happen in Denmark too? And what would you do? Tamara Aijamathiesen - a second-year student at Theaterakademie Hamburg - is directing Janne Teller's novel, and the young director has really managed to draw out the nuances of Teller's mirrored story and bring out the best in the four actors.

The production WAR - WHAT IF IT WERE HERE is full of 1:1 issues that affect foreign refugee families who land in Denmark, but in Teller's story it affects the Danish family. And I can't help but think that the show will be a huge hit once school teachers realise this nuanced, and in some ways harsh, but still accessible story. Pointing fingers? Yes. Shaming? No.
